Nothing wrong with kid swinging a heavy bat - my kid does alot of work with heavier bats - and I recommend it. He just does not swing it (heavy bat) in a game.

Much of the work we do will include heavier bats - and then I finish session with the bat the kid normally uses. The more work you do with the heavier bats - the more you build the swing and more accustomed/accomplished the kid will be with a/the heavier bat - and then kid can (eventually) use the heavier bat.
