He just turned 8, is 4'4'' and weighs about 70 lbs. He is finishing up his 2nd year of machine pitch and is actually eligible to play machine pitch next season. We moved him up early from t-ball because he was so bored. For the last two season has used the DeMarini "Flash" 28in/17oz with a -11 drop. He is a heavy hitter. Most of the time he hits the first one out of the machine. When he hits the sweet spot he can get it to the fence. Several boys on our team hit it to the fence when they use his bat. Lately, he has been foul tipping quite a bit. Does that mean he is all of a sudden not standing and swinging correctly or is the sweet spot on this bat fairly small??
He is an awesome player. He plays 3rd base and made the All-Star team from our area. I want to keep him hitting to the fence and had already thought about a new bat since he has used this one for 2 years.
After reading alot of your posts I'm thinking we probably didn't start off with the right size but he has done really well with it up to this point.
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

My son is 7 and is 4' 4" also, but only weighs 60 lbs. He will be 8 in September. He has been using a 29" - 13oz Omaha aluminum through regular season this year. He made All Stars for 7U because of his batting. Some of the kids on the team were using composite bats and he tried it. I could not believe how much farther he was hitting the ball. I watched a couple more practices and the same thing happened night after night. Well naturally I ordered him one. he was using the Combat ByB1 DaBomb 29" 17oz. He had three homeruns during All Star play and led the team in triples and doubles.
Now this is my sons favorite bat and he is a bigger threat to the opposing team.
In my opinion, I would say you need to buy a bigger bat for your slugger. As far as foul tips he may just need to scoot back in the batters box a few inches. He is making contact with the ball. It is just hitting high on the bat.
Hope this helps

Thank you LAJones. I appreciate your input and was wondering what made you decide to go with Combat? How do you know which composite is the best???
What weight and length would you recommend for my slugger?
Thanks again,

i would try a 29" in., 17-18oz bat.
what is your price range?
if he is a power hitter, like you say i would go with for an aluminium bat: Voodoo
For a composite bat: Combat Virus, Combat B1 DaBomb, stealth composite, or a Cf3, but be prepared to he the wooden sound, don't think anythings broken.
you have alot of choices but if i could get a price range i might be able to zero in on some bats:)
In the words of Dsore "the bat is a tool, the player is the weapon":)

aluminum or composite better?? What is the biggest difference??
I want my (weapon) player to have the best bat (tool) I can afford him.
I would like to keep it around $200 or less.
Thank you again for your reply and help.

Composite is better...http://www.kettering.edu/~drussell/bats-new/compalum.html
I suggest like the others either Combat...I prefer the Virus

well there is 2 sides to this argument, one of them being composites take anywhere from 50-100 hits to "break in", fresh out of the wrapper there junk. On the other hand aluminium is pretty hot out of the wrapper, but stays the same the whole time instead of getting much hotter. A broken in composite is hotter (hits the ball for more distance) then an aluminium, but you have to give "a break in period" to get that hotness.

going with a bat that's around $200 then look no further than the ComBat DaBomb-12. The 29" 17oz. bat sounds good for your son. Yep, there'll be a little break in period, but one day of pitching to him should take care of that. Maybe do some soft-toss as well. go to Justbats.com and click on ComBat.
